Kalyna Country

KALYNA COUNTRY is home to the scenic and historic North Saskatchewan River. While in the area, explore the Trans Canada Trail as well as jet boat tours, fishing, and scenic adventures.

Highway 16 east leads directly to the sprawling wildlife sanctuary of ELK ISLAND NATIONAL PARK, home to flourishing populations of plains and wood bison, elk, moose, deer, coyote, and beaver. Its lakes, forests, meadows, and wetlands allow viewing of more than 250 species of birds, including loons and trumpeter swans.

Just east of the national park, on Highway 16, you’ll find the UKRAINIAN CULTURAL HERITAGE VILLAGE, where more than 30 restored buildings and costumed role-players recreate history daily. Ride in a horse-drawn wagon, nibble on Ukrainian delicacies, or explore the historic buildings.

Travel North on Highway 857 to the Smoky Lake region. There you’ll find the Worlds Largest Mushrooms in VILNA. Further west along Highway 28, in the town of Smoky Lake, PUMPKIN PARK boasts a display of seven gigantic pumpkins — the largest weighing more than 4,500 kg (10,000 lbs).

Just South of Smoky Lake along the Majestic North Saskatchewan River is the VICTORIA DISTRICT NATIONAL HISTORIC SITE including METIS CROSSING, Alberta’s Premier Metis Cultural Interpretive Centre.
