Explore the history, technology and future of the planet’s largest oil sands mine on a stimulating day trip from Edmonton.

Allow one or two days to experience Edmonton Festival City, and at least one day to “experience the energy” in Fort McMurray (optional overnight in Fort McMurray).

EARLY MORNING
Take a direct early morning flight (1 hour and 5 minutes) from Edmonton. Discover Fort McMurray and the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo on a short sightseeing tour with a stop for refreshments.

MID-MORNING
Tour the Oil Sands Discovery Centre (OSDC) and experience a big-screen film presentation, Quest For Energy. Discover how the oil was formed millions of years ago. Outside, walk beside a mammoth, seven-storey-high bucket-wheel excavator and tour gigantic mine equipment in the Industrial Garden. Follow your tour with lunch at the Sawridge Inn, across the street from the Oil Sands Discovery Centre.

AFTERNOON
Depart the Oil Sands Discovery Centre for a bus tour to either Syncrude Canada or Suncor Energy mine sites. Watch the earth move as shovels that dig out 10 tons with one scoop load trucks that carry 380 tons of the rich, black oil sand. Follow the process from mining to pipeline. As well, see how the sand is reclaimed and the natural environment is restored after the mining process. Stay overnight or take the return flight to Edmonton.
