Beyond Edmonton – North
Just beyond metro Edmonton, blue skies beckon as you take a leisurely drive north to the peaceful, homespun communities of Bon Accord, Gibbons, Legal, Morinville, Redwater, St. Albert and Sturgeon County.
THE CITY OF ST. ALBERT — The oldest non-fortified community in Alberta offers sites of interest including the historic Father Lacombe Chapel, Western Canada’s largest outdoor farmers’ market, the St. Albert Botanic Park (featuring the largest public rose garden in Alberta), and Hole’s Greenhouse on the north banks of the Sturgeon River — founded by the late Lois E. Hole, a beloved Lieutenant Governor of Alberta. A vibrant arts scene and recreation facilities add to this city’s charm.
STURGEON COUNTY — Meet potters, glass artists, sculptors, and painters at various artisans’ home studios and galleries here. French-Canadian culture can be traced along the French Corridor in St. Albert, Morinville and Legal, the Canadian Capital of French Murals, which touts 28 painted murals on town buildings depicting the history of French settlers in the district. Fresh bread and locally grown organic herbs and produce are a given at Peas on Earth Market Gardens and, if visiting in summer, don’t miss the annual Country Soul Stroll — a self-guided driving tour through Greater Edmonton that showcases country attractions.
